The STOP D.A.P. L. (Dakota Access Pipe Line) Series is a recent body of work by Tom Huakaas, protesting the construction of this 1,172 underground pipeline. In 2016, the Lakota people of Standing Rock Reservation protested this invasion of their community and garnered the attention of the world. Mr. Huakaas views the Dakota Access Pipe Line as a threat not only to the environment and water supplies but also to community and culture. He uses pen and ink drawing in a collage process with antique paper taken from science text and medical announcements to make his point with traditional Lakota imagery and symbols. His work always references historical events and people, embedded in both the traditional and the contemporary.
Tom Red Owl Haukaas is an enrolled member of the Rosebud Lakota tribe and his work has earned many awards over the last 25 years. Tom’s art includes quillwork, beadwork and dolls as well as Plains traditional and contemporary 2D art forms. His vignettes are filled at with historic detail. Tom’s work has been included in many notable museum collections and exhibitions, including Denver Art Museum and Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art among others. |
