19th Century Deg Xit'an (formerly Ingalik) Mask
The Deg Xit'an people are an Athapascan speaking group who live in the Yukon River basin and are neighbors to the Yupik people as well as other Athapascan groups. Their proximity to Yupik (formerly known as Eskimo) people has greatly influenced their mask making tradition. This example which dates to the 19th century was collected by the noted anthropologist Cornerlius Osgood. It is a shaman's mask meant to influence the wind, again echoing the tradition of Yupik masks.
